Note (1994)

Dumbarton, Castlegreen Road, Gasholder is a water-sealed, 4 lift spiral, 5,000,000 cubic feet capacity holder dating from 1952/53 (put to work 1953). The tank and holder is by Newton Chambers and Co. Limited. By the time of decommissioning, it had been used to store natural gas.

The diameter of the different lifts of the holder are as follows: 199' 8" (Top), 202' 10" (Second), 206' 0" (Third) and 209' 2" (Fourth) all with a depth of 40 ' 6" except Top (40' 0").

The Top has 24 spiral rails; Second, 36; Third, 48; Fourth, 60. All rails weigh in at 55 lbs per yard.

The crown rise is 14' 0". It has 4 X 8" valves (curb), 2 flat manhoe covers. There are anti-vacuum devices (mechanical operation trip; holder low pressure trip).

Gas and air vents: 2 livesey Boxes and 3X8" valves (centre).

The sheeting thickness is as follows: Crown, Outer Row = 3/4"; at Top Row = 1/2" and at the Bottom Row = 3/8".

Cups and grips are 12" X 3 1/2" X 26.37 llbs. RSC.

Top Curb and Crown Framing: 6" X 6" X 1" angle - no othr details.

Access the holders are: lifts, spirl stircases no passing platforms fitted. Access to Tank: by staircase.

The tank measures 212' 0" in diameter, with a depth of 40' 10" with the bottom curb at ground level.

The gasholder is of rvetted steel.

The tank is of rvetted steel.

The inlet and outlets are 30" in width. The connections : inlet on north and outlet to the south and separated. Anti-flood pipes fitted.

Desk Based Assessment

This gas holder dates from the early 1950s. It has been decommissioned as a gas holder and partially demolished. The gasworks of which it was part has been demolished.
