Archaeology Notes

NS47SE 22 4600 7313 and 4600 7320

(NS 460 731). Two separate prehistoric burials were uncovered in 1923 and 1924 during the excavation of Old Kilpatrick Roman fort (NS47SE 8). The first 'grave' was found outside the S wall of the Roman praetorium. Oval in shape, it had walling of small slabs and boulders with flagstones covering the 'mouth'. Along with evidence of cremation, fragments of three different urns were found; two were later classififed as neolithic and the third, beaker.

S N Miller 1928; J G Callander 1933; M E C Mitchell 1934.

The second 'grave', a short cist, of six upright slabs and a paved floor, was found in the northern part of the praetentura. It contained a nearly complete food vessel in its upper half, but no evidence of cremation.

The finds are in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow.

Information from A S Robertson 1951.

With reference to Miller and Macdonald (1934) as to the position of the internal Roman buildings, the two graves can be sited as follows: first grave - NS 4600 7313; second grave - NS 4600 7320.

The entire area is now built over.

Visited by OS (FDC), 14 August 1951.
