North Barr House was built in 1676 in the form of a court by Donald M'Gilchrist; in 1741 it passed to Hugh, 11th Lord Sempill (Semple) and was thereafter known as Sempill (Semple) House. Though still extant in 1804, no trace now remains of the mansion, the site now being in a ploughed field. The farm of North Barr, (North Barr: NS 4666 7140) occupies the stables and outhouses. The lands of North Barr belonged to the Stewarts of Darnley before 1497. (Crawfurd and Semple (1782) assume that a new house was built by Lord Semple, though McClelland states that only the name was changed) (see also NS46NE 3).
R McClelland 1905
It is most likely that the house stood within the enclosure (centred NS 4655 7140) close to the former stables, although nothing could be seen on the ground to establish the site. The present temporary tenants of the stables could give no information. The stables at NS 4666 7140 are in a ruinous condition; they bear a date stone of 1679, whilst in the loft is a heraldic device in stone.
