(NS 4000 6421) Castle (NR) (Site of)

OS 1:10000 map (1973)

There is a ruinous castle northwest of Barr Hill, on the lands of Penneld. Said to have been built by someone called Haic, it was never finished (Statistical Account [OSA] 1791). The site of this castle was pointed out by Mr R Reid (of Penwold); it is barely traceable the foundation stones having been removed.

Name Book 1856

Much of Kilbarchan parish was known as Penuld in the time of Walter Stewart (about 1161-77) and formed the fee of Henry of St Martin. The name Penuld is now represented by Penneld and Penwold House.

G W S Barrow 1973

Many years ago a few stones faced up to make a wall were found here a few feet below the surface, and were used in the making of a rockery at Penwold House. The position is known locally as the site of the Old Castle (Mr Barclay, gardener, Penwold House). There are a few rough-hewn stones near the spot indicated by the siting symbol; Mr Barclay said that these are similar to the ones which formed the stone wall.

Activities

Desk Based Assessment (2012)

CFA Archaeology Ltd undertook an assessment of the cultural heritage implications of the proposed route of a replacement overhead line (XF Route) from Neilston, Renfrewshire to Windyhill, East Dunbartonshire.

Although 109 cultural heritage features were identified by the desk-based assessment of the 250m buffer around the proposed route of the replacement XF overhead line, very few of these lie along the route of the line, or in immediate vicinity of the location of any of the towers.

The overhead line replacement project has been assessed against the cultural heritage baseline. Taking into account the construction methodology to be employed and agreed mitigation strategy, it is considered that the development conforms to Local and National Policy relating to the cultural heritage resource.
