Erected burgh of barony in 1488; burgh of regality, 1587. Approached erection as a royal burgh in 1658-66.

Memorial asks for retention of the duty as certain building measures were necessary. Among these are:

1. Building a new meal market.

2. Enlarging the prison and courthouse
