The original village of Houston stood near the church (NS46NW 14: at NS 4100 6706) and Houston House (NS46NW 13: at NS 4115 6716). About 1780, a Captain Macrae, who had purchased the estate, gave the villagers the materials to build new homes, on condition that they moved two or three hundred yards away (see also NS46NW 12).
