(NS 4209 4514) Cairn Duff (NR) (site of)

OS 6" map (1970)

Cairn Duff was almost entirely removed about 1810. It was a large mound of stones covered with grass and trees. Three urns containing human bones were found in it.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845 (C B Steven); OS Name Book 1856; J Smith 1895.

The centre of Cairn Duff has been completely removed, leaving only a low, sub-circular stony bank averaging 1.0m wide and up to 0.7m high.

Surveyed at 1:2500 scale.

Visited by OS (EGC), 7 February 1962

The remains of this turf-covered cairn are situated on a prominent hill crest at approximately 110m OD. Although its amorphous spread, up to 1m in height, is confused and shaped by late field banks on the E, N and W, a fair quantity of stone is still evident, and it can be estimated that it was once circular and over 20m in diameter.

Visited by OS (JRL), 25 October 1982.
