Archaeology Notes

NB35SE 11 3793 5497.

In the cliff face at NB 3793 5497, there is a layer of midden material about 1 foot below the present ground level, containing shells, animal bones and pottery sherds, the latter classified by Stevenson (R B K Stevenson, National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland [NMAS]) as Iron Age 'bead-rim' ware. There are traces of rough walling protruding through the cliff indicative of a habitation site.

Visited by OS (NKB) 20 June 1969.

Scheduled with NB35SE 10 as Teampull Pheadair, chapel and settlement, Shader.

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 24 February 1992.

Activities

Soil Sampling (4 March 2003 - 12 March 2003)

AOC Archaeology were grant aided by Historic Scotland for a second successive season of fieldwork related to a partnership project to assist a PhD studentship investigating the Marine Reservoir Effect, as well as a further project which includes analyses of Plaggan Soils. A total of 25 potential sites were visited to ascertain their potential for sample retrieval relating to the two projects described above.

None of the ecofactual or artefactual material noted at any of the sites visited could be described as being in secure contexts. The material was either within what appeared to be deposits interpreted as topsoil, in unstratified spreads, which were eroding out of the overlying eroding windblown sands, or in the case of Galston within deposits which appeared to have slumped down from above. In light of this no samples were taken for the PhD studentship concerned with the Marine Resevoir Effect. Some soil micromorphological samples were, however, taken in the connection with the study into Plaggan soils. These samples will be reported on at a later date.

Field Visit (March 2007 - February 2008)

Walkover, topographical and geophysical surveys were undertaken between March 2007 and February 2008 at two sites the W side of the Isle of Lewis.

NB 3792 5499 – Teampall Pheadair, Siadar – Eroding Iron Age structures were recorded below the later chapel. An enclosure and possible grave slabs were recorded from around the chapel site, as well as the pre-crofting enclosure walls and a corn-drying kiln on the N side of the Teampall. Geophysical survey confirmed the presence of earlier structures below the chapel site.

Project (March 2007 - February 2008)

Walkover, topographical and geophysical surveys were undertaken between March 2007 and February 2008 at two sites the W side of the Isle of Lewis.

NB 2882 4890 – Tempall Eoin, Bragar – Topographic survey was carried out of the chapel building and later enclosures, before further collapse of the chapel’s walls. The survey also recorded over 2,000 unmarked gravestones in the old cemetery around the Teampall. A detailed contour survey of the sandy mound into which the chapel is set was carried out, different alignments of grave slabs were identified, and the locations of roofing slates from the ruined chapel which had been reused as grave markers were noted. Topographic survey had also been planned at Tigh a’ Bheannaich, Aird Uig, but was cancelled due to storms.
