(NS 4290 0058) Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map (1968)

A large, turf-covered cairn measuring 15m E-W by 14m and 2m high on the N. A slight hollow 0.4m deep in the E side may indicate that it has been opened. It lies in a field, formerly cultivated, in which there are about fifty clearance heaps. The cairn is larger than any of these and nearer the river but the possibility exists that it is also field clearance (J Smith 1895).

Visited by OS (JLD) 17 November 1955

A grass-covered burial cairn, as described in the previous field report. There are a number of small clearance heaps to the S of this cairn.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (BS) 26 May 1976

This cairn, which is on low-lying, cultivated ground, is almost certainly prehistoric.

Resurveyed at 1:10,000.

The twenty-plus cairns to the S are spread on the periphery of an unenclosed narrow rig and furrow system which is part of the depopulated site at NS 4262 0043. These clearance mounds and also dumps of small stones are up to 3.0m in diameter and 0.5m in height.

Visited by OS (MJF) 19 September 1980
