NS40NE 22.2

Mine opened 1924, closed 1957. Produced coal, 800 tons per day at peak. Employed about 340 men when in full operation. Gradient in drift mines about 1: 2.5, main access roads about 200ft in length. Double track tub way in mineral mines, 3 rail tracks in man ridden with passing passing place about the centre of the run. Gauge 24inches, rail weight 25lbs per foot length.

Information from Alex Johnstone of Dalmellington, former mine blacksmith (started in 1931) as recounted to GJ Douglas, Industrial Survey, RCAHMS (later part of HES), 1989.
