'The oldest part of Camis Eskan dates no further back than 1648, but its present appearance and condition are much more recent'. The mansion was unfinished in 1667.
D Murray 1888.
Camis Eskan is a composite mansion, the oldest part containing walls 4ft thick and a barrel vault. The date '1648' is inscribed above a window in the east wall, and a coat of arms is visible on an interior wall, originally the south exterior wall. Extensions to the original building have been made on the south west and north, and the exterior has been renovated.
The building, now a hospital, was formerly called 'Colgrain' and the grounds are still known as the Colgrain Estate.
Visited by OS (DS), 9 October 1956.
As described above.
