Archaeology Notes

NS37NE 20 c. 39 75.

Two plain gold armlets, terminating in flattened button like extremities: one weighs 19 dwts. 6 grs. the other 17 dwts. 18 grs. - and a curious hollow pennanular gold ornament weighing 11 dwts. and measuring 1 7/8" in diameter by nearly 5/8" in depth in the centre. The only information relating to their history was that they were procured from a Highlander who stated they were found in a moss in the West Highlands in 1856.

Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1862

A large, hollow, pennanular ornament of thin gold, nearly triangular in section, was found near Dumbarton.

J Evans 1881

A gold hoard found in a moss in 1856 in the West Highlands, was acquired by a jeweller, Mr P Denny in Dumbarton, and presented by him to the NMAS. The hoard consisted of two pennanular armlets, and one pennanular disc.

J Anderson 1886

Enquiries during field investigation did not reveal any information about the above finds. It would appear from the description above that th these gold ornaments were found in the West Highlands and not near Dumbarton.

Visited by OS (JHO) 7 and 13 April 1951

PSAS gives a sub-reference to Archaeol J (1856) No.51 which apparently compares a pennanular ornament from Anglesey with that alleged to have been found near Dumbarton.

Visited by OS (JLD) 8 March 1956
