Architecture Notes

Description:

1903. 11-arch viaduct spanning Lugton Water; mass concrete with rubble; chanelled rustication to cement facing; string course at springing and parapet. Disused, in state of disprepair.

Notes:

Constructed for the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway, using mass concrete and rubble bound with cement. The cement render facing is chanelled to resemble masonry. The viaduct is in a state of disrepair and North Ayrshire Council has proposed complete demolition of the structure (2003). Gree Viaduct is a landmark structure set in open pasture land and the eleven arches can be viewed from the main Lochlibo Road. The tallest centre arches have a height of 22.4m.
