Archaeology Notes

NS35NE 11 3933 5687

(NS 3933 5687) Wallace's Knowe is a small eminence in the midst of a morass, which is a meadow in summer, but a loch in winter. According to tradition, Sir William Wallace defended himself here against a party of Englishmen. There is no doubt that he possessed property here (i.e. Auchenbathie Tower - NS35NE 10) (NSA 1845). There are many large boulders, and a few trees on this knowe.

(Wallace's Knowe, shown on OS 6" 1857, is now submerged in Barcraigs Reservoir, except for its highest point, which forms an island).

OS Name Book 1856.
