A votive hoard (J G Scott 1966) consisting of five or six bronze shields, placed on edge in a ring, was found 6ft or 7ft below the surface by labourers casting peats in 1779 or 1780 on Lugtonridge farm, Beith (Lugtonridge farm names: centred NS 37 49).

Only one shield, donated to the Society of Antiquities of London survives. It is 69cms in diameter and has a central boss surrounded by 29 ribs alternating with rows of small bosses. A hand grip is attached by rivets behind the central boss. It was made in the Late Bronze Age, probably between 800 and 700 BC.
