Field Visit (April 1985)

Hillhouse NS 3435 3378 NS33SW 15

The present mansion at Hillhouse (a listed building largely of 19th-century date) probably occupies the site of its predecessor which was demolished about 1800. A lintel, bearing the date 1671 and the initials JMK and EW (John McKerrell and Elizabeth Wallace), is set above the gate to the walled garden 70m to the ESE. There may have been a tower at Hillhouse about 1570.

RCAHMS 1985, visited April 1985.

(Paterson 1863-6, i, 480-5; Strawhorn 1959, 297).
