Archaeology Notes

NS33SE 12 36 34

A small stone lamp was found in recent years in a garden on the E side of Dundonald village (NS 36 34); and a piece of old bronze was found in another garden on the W side. It formed a segment of a circle and weighed nearly four pounds (W Alexander 1894). The stone lamp is of a kind of serpentinous stone and may not be native.

J Smith 1895.

No further information concerning the stone lamp. Kilmarnock Museum accessions list "part of a bronze plate - found while digging a garden in Dundonald - NS 365 345". The donor was a Mr J H Alexander in 1911 (Accession no: DO 13). The plate was not available for inspection; it is thought to be in store at Dean Castle, Kilmarnock (C Woodward, Museum Dept, Dick Institute, Kilmarnock).

Visited by OS (JRL), 25 May 1982.
