(NS 3390 2230) Newton Castle (NR) (Site of)

OS 25" map (1961).

Newton Castle formerly stood east of Garden Street. Paterson states that it is impossible to ascertain when it was built, but judging from its structure, i.e.a small square tower, to which larger works had been added, it may date from the 13th-14th century. It was for a long time the seat of the Wallaces of Craigie, until blown down in 1701. Its large dovecot and garden wall are mentioned in 1723. The castle was finally removed in the late 18th century, and 1837 only part of the garden wall remained (plan copied by Paterson from Slezer's View of Ayr in 1693).

No traces remain of Newton Castle or its associated buildings and walls; the area is completely built upon. From the illustration, the castle would appear to be of 15th century date (c/f Dundas Castle: NT17NW 6).
