Carrick Vennel Port blocked the vennel of the same name.
R Gourlay and A Turner 1977
Though Lyon states that Carrick Port stood near the middle of what is now Carrick Street (approx: NS 3374- 2176) Dillon states that "Carrick Port" may have been an alternative name for the "Sandgate Port" (NS32SW 27). However, he adds that there may have been a port blocking the end of Carrick Vennel, part of which is now Carrick street: "The vennel would be the quickest route from market into Carrick, via Alloway. If this was an open route to the burgh, a Carrick Port would exist." Tessin's map of 1654 does not show any barrier in this lane, but the name "Carrick Port" appears well before this date, i.e. in 1545 (A I Dunlop 1953).
