(NS 3379 2204) Fish Cross (NR) (Site of)

OS 25" map (1961)

The Fish Cross, which marked where the fish market was held, was erected in 1539 (R W Brash and A Leach 1972). It was the town cross of Ayr in all but name (A I Dunlop 1953). It was removed in December 1854 (Name Book 1855) and its site is marked by a cross of stones set into the roadway, and noted on a plaque on the wall of 45 and 47 High Street.

J Stillie 1864; R Gourlay and A Turner 1977

There is no trace of this cross; its site is indicated on the ground in the way noted above.
