The main gateway of Cromwell's fort is situated behind the present Academy building. Only its upper part is visible.

This gateway is fairly well preserved; its lower part has been filled up to form the lane behind the Academy and the entrance itself has been built up. It is a plain arch with a rectilinear lintel, in ashlar masonry.

In His Majesty's General Register House, Record Office, is a plan called the "Citadel of Ayr", shewing various outbuildings but also shewing the surrounding walls and bastions of the original fortress. No date given. Scale 2 inches to 12 feet.
