Archaeology Notes

NS31SW 15 3194 1313.

NS 3194 1313. APs (540/680: 3057-8, flown 1952) show the apparent remains of a sub-oval enclosure bank measuring overall c45m E-W by 35m N-S.

On a low eminence under pasture at c75m OD is the unsurveyable amorphous vestiges of a probable earthwork comprising a ploughed-down shapeless swelling, over 30m in diameter, which merges almost imperceptively with the natural rise. No stonework or indications of a bank were found, but there may have been a ditch of uncertain width around the W side, in evidence mainly as a vegetation mark.

The AP and ground evidence together with the location suggests that this was an enclosure (? possible settlement) of archaeological significance. The farmer at Laigh Smithston (NS 323 123) can remember no extent earthwork here.
