Archaeology Notes

NS30SE 3 3792 0337.

(NS 3792 0337) A cinerary urn was found in digging the foundation for a 30' high obelisk erected on the top of Bennan Hill circa 1787 and removed circa 1855. Another urn, much smaller than the first, was found about 1790 at the further side of the same hill (Sir J Hunter-Blair, Milton, Straiton) (OSA 1793; NSA 1845; Name Book 1856).

Visited by OS (WDJ) 6 September 1968

Nothing significant was noted on the undulating, grassed summit area of Bennan Hill. There is no trace of the obelisk nor local information of its former position. Armstrong's map of 1775 shows an obelisk but the scale and portrayal give no help as to exact location.
