Archaeology Notes

NS28SE 5 2674 8397

For successor and present church, see also NS28SE 31.

Rhu parish church was first built in 1648 (NSA 1845). This building was demolished in 1763 and a second church which was enlarged in 1827, was erected on the site. The present building was constructed in 1851 (information from C Robertson, minister of Rhu parish).

NS 2674 8397. In the churchyard, to the south of the present building, is a wall fragment containing a window. The wall is probably part of the AD 1763 church, but may be a portion of the earlier building.

Visited by OS (DS) 25 September 1956

The fragment of wall described by OS (DS) is 6.0m long and 0.8m wide.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 16 January 1963
