Archaeology Notes

NS24SW 34 centred 2264 4220

Location formerly entered as NS 224 419.

(Location cited as NS 224 419). Ardrossan Shipyard, late 19th-early 20th century. Some buildings remain here, including a three-storey, 6- by 4-bay flat-roofed office block and a 13-bay brick and corrugated-iron workshop shed, both derelict.

J R Hume 1976.

This yard was originaly designed for the building of ships made of wood. By 1900, the shipbuilding yard had three berths for building boats, a graving dock (for ships up to 1,000 tons) and a repair slip (for boats upto 400 tons). Equipment was renewed in 1888 and in 1898 the yard changed hands and became the Ardrossan Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Co Ltd. The yard was further modernised in 1907 and by 1912 was enjoying great prosperity.

C Levy and Ardrossan Local History Workshop 1983

The remains of the shipbuilding yard had been demolished and the area had been in-filled and built on by the date of visit.

Visited by RCAHMS (GJD), 9 March 1994.
