Archaeology Notes

NS24NW 4 c. 20 48.

There are four felstone axes from West Kilbride (NS 20 48) in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS).

(i) Accession no AF 294, partly polished, measuring 3 1/4" x 2 3/8", was purchased in 1887,

(ii) AF 295, portion only, imperfect at both ends, purchased 1887;

(iii) AF 297, polished, slightly chipped, sides flat 6 1/2" x 2 5/8", purchased 1887; and

(iv) AF 418, measures 4 1/4" x 2 1/2", donated in 1894.

Smith notes an axe-hammer, and a whorl from West Kilbride district. The axe-hammer, in the possession of Mr McGillivray of West Kilbride, measured 8 3/4 ins by 3 ins by 2 ins; the whorl was 1 1/2 ins in diameter. (Axe- hammer listed by Roe as a ? axe-hammer, whereabouts unknown.
