Archaeology Notes

NS24NW 15 c. 206 464.

Two urns were discovered by Mr Cunningham in the spring of 1865 when ploughing on Chapelton farm (NS 206 464). According to Cunningham (1873), one urn, struck by the plough, was inverted over calcined bones and a Scotsburn Group battle-axe (F E S Roe 1967).

A little east was a smaller urn, also with calcined bones. However, Cochrane-Patrick (1873), followed by Morrison, who calls it a cordoned urn, though no description is given, states that the battle-axe was found in the smaller urn. The urns were broken, but the battle-axe is in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS Accession no: EQ 65).

A Morrison 1968.

The battle-axe NMS EQ 65 is a grooved example of the Northern Variant form. It has been petrologically identified as porphyritic olivine basalt.

T H McK Clough and W A Cummins 1988.
