(NS 2932 0050) Kilkerran Castle (NR) (In Ruins)

OS 6" map (1909)

The keep of Kilkerran was probably erected in the 15th century. Only a fragment remains.

D MacGibbon and T Ross 1892

The remaining walls of Kilkerran Castle are 1.5m thick and measure 5.0m N-S by 8.0m transversely. The N gable wall shows that the keep was at least three storeys high. The S part of the keep is covered with fallen masonry. A causewayed road runs from the keep on the S.

Revised at 25".

Visited by OS (WDJ) 2 December 1959

NS 2931 0050. No change to the previous report. The castle is situated at the end of a NW-SE promontory which falls steeply on the E side to the Lindsayston Burn The causewayed approach from the E retains no aspect of antiquity.

Revised at 25".

Visited by OS (JRL) 18 May 1977
