(NS 1466 5185) St Vey's Tomb (NR). "In the tomb, which is at a little distance north of the chapel (St Vey's Chapel - NS15SW 6), are two flat stones, on one of which, now broken in two, are sculptured some ornamental tracery, such as is usually called...Danish..., but no vestige of any inscription...This enclosure, which is of a square form, and of very limited dimensions, was originally surrounded by a stone wall, but of which only the foundation now exists."
New Statistical Account 1845 (NSA, J Fullarton)
"A flat or horizontal flag said to be the grave or tomb of an abbott".
Name Book 1856
At NS 1467 5188 are the remains of a rectangular building, 6.0m by 5.0m, its walls turf-covered and 0.4m high. From the appearance of the debris on the east side of the structure it seems likely that there was a second compartment. This would appear to be the remains of St Vey's Tomb.
Surveyed at 1/2500.
Neither the sculptured stone nor the enclosing stone wall was located.
Visited by OS (JTT) 1 December 1964
The exercise was a general survey of the island to report on the condition of known sites and to identify and record any new sites. The survey was carried out by members of ACFA and the Cowal Archaeology & Historical Society in March 1996. A copy of the full report has been lodged with the NMRS.
