Not to be confused with Holy Island, Outer Lighthouse (Pillar Rock Lighthouse: NS 06860 29101), for which see NS02NE 10.

This lighthouse was built in 1877, and was converted from oil to gas burning (with a corresponding reduction in manpower) by D A Stevenson soon after 1898. Electrification (on the sealed beam system) and automation followed in 1976, the maximum available candlepower being 736,000. An automatic fog signal is also in operation.

R W Munro 1979.

This shore lighthouse is situated near sea level on the SW point of Holy Island, facing into Lamlash Bay. It guards the S entrance into the bay.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 16 June 2010.
