Not to be confused with Holy Island, Outer Lighthouse (Pillar Rock Lighthouse: NS 06860 29101), for which see NS02NE 10.
This lighthouse was built in 1877, and was converted from oil to gas burning (with a corresponding reduction in manpower) by D A Stevenson soon after 1898. Electrification (on the sealed beam system) and automation followed in 1976, the maximum available candlepower being 736,000. An automatic fog signal is also in operation.

This shore lighthouse is situated near sea level on the SW point of Holy Island, facing into Lamlash Bay. It guards the S entrance into the bay.
