Archaeology Notes

HU25SE 16 298 523.

(HU 2984 5231) Burnside On Site of Cuml (OE).

O.S.6"map, Shetland, 2nd ed., (1903).

A cairn, about 35' in diameter, which has been practically stripped of its material.

RCAHMS 1946. Visited 1931.

At HU 2987 5230, is not a cairn, but the amorphous remains of a Ne/BA homestead, now a mere scatter of stones. It was dug into by Mr. B. Williamson of Burnside, some years ago, who found several rough stone implements, some still in his possession.

At HU 2973 5223 are the remains of another Neolithic/Bronze Age homestead, situated on a shelf on a NE slope, robbed for the building of a nearby plantie crub. There are traces of an enclosure wall which abut onto its E side. Several low field walls and stone clearance heaps in the area indicate a small associated field system.

Visited by OS(NKB) 16th June 1968.
