Archaeology Notes

NR84SW 2 8079 4435.

(NR 8079 4435) About 90m NW of the bridge that carries the public road over the Allt Sunadale at Grogport, and at a height of 10m OD, there are the remains of a cist known locally as "The Sailor's Grave". It measures 1.2m by 0.74m internally with the long axis aligned roughly N and S, and is built of thin slabs, measuring between 0.08m and 0.18m in thickness; the side slabs are each 1.4m long and slightly overlap the N and S end-slabs, which are 0.7m and 0.5m long respectively. The cap-stone, which projects about 0.05m above ground, is broken, and two portions of it now partially cover the cist, one at either end, with a gap of 0.4m between them. The interior is filled with rubble and the remaining fragments of the cover slab.
