Archaeology Notes

NR73NW 4 7066 3697.

(NR 7059 3789) Cup-marked stone.

Information from D Colville 1953.

(NR 7068 3699) (information from RCAHMS 6" map). A cup-marked stone lies in open moorland 110m south of the long head-dyke and 685m east of its intersection with the Allt a' Mhuilinn. Measuring 1.7m by 1.4m and projecting 0.6m above ground, it bears on its upper surface 25 plain cups, most of them shallow and worn.

RCAHMS 1971, visited 1962.

The cup-marked boulder as described by RCAHMS (1971) is located at NR 7065 3696. Colville (1953) is presumably referring to this boulder, as it is the most prominent of four other cup-marked stones in the vicinity. (See NR73NW 14, NR73NW 15, NR73NW 18. )

Surveyed at 1:10 000.

Visited by OS (NKB) 30 January 1978.

Archaeological desk-based assessment and field inspection were undertaken in March 1996 within the area of a proposed plantation W of Loch Arnicle. Evidence for pre-recent settlement had previously been identified by the Strathclyde Joint Archaeology Service. The current survey identified additional unrecorded sites related to prehistoric, medieval and post-medieval land and livestock management practices.

The following site is amongst those recorded during the evaluation (NMRS reference numbers in brackets):

NR 7066 3697 Cup-marked stone (NR73NW 4).

Full details will be lodged with the NMRS.
