Archaeology Notes

NR56NW 3 5222 6698

(NR 5222 6698) Dun

Information from RCAHMS.

On a low knoll is an ill-preserved dun, sub-oval on plan measuring overall 19.5m NE-SW by 14.5m. No wall faces are discernible, and the interior is featureless. The wall is visible as a heather-overgrown band of rubble 0.3m maximum height internally and approximately 2.5 to 3.0m broad; a depression in the NE arc probably indicates an entrance position, this being a likely approach. There is no sign of any outwork.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (J M) 2 May 1978.

Activities

Field Visit (May 1976)

NR 522 669. What may be the remains of a dun occupy the summit of a small knoll, standing up to 8m above the surrounding ground and situated 400m WSW of Jura Distillery and 250m SW of Ballard. Measuring 15m by 11m within a wall some 2m in average thickness, it has been severely robbed of its stone to provide material for nearby field-walls, and only a low band of rubble survives. There was probably an entrance on the N.

RCAHMS 1984, visited May 1976

Measured Survey (1976)

Surveyed at 1:400. Published at 1:1000 (RCAHMS 1984, fig. 106D).
