Activities

Field Visit (5 February 2011 - 30 September 2012)

Stable (NC 2630 9187) Field survey carried out in 2011 recorded a wooden framed and walled building with a corrugated iron roof, at the confluence of the Allt Gobhlach and the An Crom-allt. This was built by the Duke of Sutherland in c.1945 as overnight stable accommodation for pack horses (accompanying stalkers and guests stayed at Dalnessie). Inside there is stabling for two horses. This building is constructed on earlier building foundations consisting of a turf bank to the east and a stone wall to the west (information from Andrew MacKay of Dalnessie).

Shieling (NC 63021 18869). Field survey carried out in 2011 recorded a rectangular turf bank which may be the site of a shieling. It measures 8m by 5m.

Pit with associated ditches (NC 63090 19005) Field survey carried out in 2011 recorded a rectangular water-filled pit which is fed by narrow linear ditches. The pit measures 7m by 3m and several sheets of rusting corrugated iron and a wooden post lie nearby.

Shieling (NC 63125 19145) Field survey carried out in 2011 recorded a rectangular turf bank which may be the site of a shieling. It measures 8m by 4m.

Stone Revetment (NC 63119 19083) Field survey carried out in 2011 recorded a length of drystone revetment where the stalkers path runs close to the An Crom-allt. It measures up to 10m in length and 0.5m in height with three courses of stone visible.

Bridge (site of) (NC 63016 18787) Field survey carried out in 2011 recorded a wooden post on the west side of the An Crom-allt. Boreholes in the post indicate that it formed part of a bridge, and a single wire cable survives. This is not the Foot Bridge recorded on the modern OS 1:25,000 map. The wooden hut (Site 13) lies c.50 m to the south. Cartographic evidence suggests this bridge was constructed between 1894 and 1908 as the path with which it is associated appears for the first time on the Ordnance Survey maps - Lairg Sheet 102 (1912) & Altnaharrow Sheet 108 (1910).
