Archaeology Notes

NR45NW 4 4100 5818.

NR 415 581. A linear settlement of Medieval huts occupies a narrow hill terrace. There are four oval huts with annexed bins, one oval hut with a separate bin, and one round hut.

Centred NR 4100 5818. A post-Medieval deserted settlement situated on a gentle south west-facing hillslope and occupying an area of approximately 8 hectares.

There are the footings of at least five rectangular buildings, the largest being 6.5m by 4.0m. The whole areas shows evidence of recent agriculture with several fragmentary field banks evident, some recent stone field clearance heaps and rig and furrow cultivation.

The round 'huts' noted by Newall (1968) were not identified.

NR 409 581. Settlement of late Medieval huts with round corn bins at the ends: three long oval huts, 15ft by 12ft with 9ft bins and two round huts, 10ft in diameter.
