Field Visit (29 February 2024 - 12 March 2024)

NH45NW 4099 5604

A knoll 360m WNW of Comrie Farm House is surrounded at its base by a turf and stone plantation dyke enclosing a mature oakwood, both of which are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 25-inch map (1876). The dyke encloses an area that measures about 125m from WNW to ESE by 90m transversely overall. A second bank (at NH 40961 56074) can be traced running NW from the steep side of the knoll for a distance of at least 20m to the plantation dyke.

A series of terraces are visible at a higher level on the W flank of the knoll, the most prominent extending for a distance of about 80m from SW to NE before petering out in an area of exposed shelving bedrock that follows the same alignment. On balance, the terraces appear to reflect the underlying geology that has also resulted in extensive outcropping across the summit and E flank of the knoll. The W part of the summit is affected by an extensive area of animal burrowing, recent tree planting and the erection of a pylon. The pylon was removed before 2018, leaving a circular hollow about 10m in diameter (at NH 40970 56050) and at least three embedded stanchions.

Visited by HES Archaeological Survey (G F Geddes) 29 February and 12 March 2024.
