OS 6" map, Argyllshire, 2nd ed., (1897).
This is a hut circle on level ground in a area of early modern land use. It measures 8.3m by 7.0m within a wall 0.7m high and spread to 2.5m broad; substantial stone is visible in the general turf cover. The entrance is in the east arc on the longer axis.
Just off the north exterior of the hut is an open-ended enclosure, rectangular to rounded in shape, measuring 7.0m NW-SE by 6.5m over a wall reduced to a turf-covered rubble spread 2.0m wide by 0.4m high. Near the hut circle is walling of probable contemporary land use, but as it occurs within later cultivation, no field pattern is apparent.
Surveyed at 1:10 000.
Visited by OS (J M), 24 August 1979.
Field Visit (June 1980)
(NR 301 646) There are two hut-circles situated 330m sw of Lyrabus; the larger measures 8m by 5m within a wall which survives as a stony bank about 2.5m thick and up to 0.7m high. Several inner facing-stones are still visible, and the entrance, which is in the SE quadrant, has been blocked in recent times by a rough band of stones. The smaller hut-circle is 3m in diameter internally within what is now a grass-covered bank 2m thick and 0.5m high; the entrance, also in the S quadrant, has a slight extension, now much denuded, on its E side.
RCAHMS 1984, visited June 1980.
Measured Survey (1980)
RCAHMS surveyed the hut-circles at Lyrabus at a scale of 1:200. The plan was redrawn in ink and published at a reduced scale (RCAHMS 1984, fig. 145D).
