Field Visit (6 December 2023)
Nothing is now visible of a building, the site of which lies in Bathing House Wood to the N of the Downing Point Gun Emplacement (NT18SE 24.2). It was rectangular on plan, measuring about 16m from WNW to ESE by 6m transversely and was linked by a corridor to another building about 4m to its NNE (NT18SE 24.11).
The building is shown on Barclay and Morris’ plan of the battery (Barclay and Morris 2019, 103 fig. 9.32) based upon maps dating from 1915-16 (WO 78/5165) held by the National Archives at Kew. It is identified as an accommodation block for a deployment of Royal Artillery, with an officers’ mess occupying the ESE section of the building.
