Metal Detector Find

NS 75 94 Gold domed engraved button dating to the 17th or 18th century. A domed sheet of gold has been attached to a circular backplate and wire loop. The upper side is decorated with sprays of leaves, petal motifs, and possible seeds or buds. There is an unidentified maker mark on the reverse consisting of a B, possibly followed by an A, under an elongated oval surmounted by four circles. This has not been matched among Scottish, English or French makers, while there appear to be some stylistic parallels with Spanish goldwork from the Toledo region.

Claimed as Treasure Trove (TT 130/22) and allocated to the Smith Art Gallery and Museum.
