Archaeology Notes

NR27SW 1 2343 7118

(NR 2354 7116) A tiny dun is situated on a rocky knoll, and measures 10m east-west by 8m transversely within a wall which was probably about 3m in maximum thickness but which survives only as core material. The entrance is probably in the south.

F Newall 1964; Information from RCAHMS (visited May 1975) to OS.

NR 2344 7119 The remains of a dun as described by the RCAHMS.

Surveyed at 1:10000.

Visited by OS (N K B) 19 June 1978.

Activities

Field Visit (May 1976)

NR 234 711. On a small grassy knoll, 5.8m high and situated 550m NNW of Sanaigmore farmhouse and within 100m of the shore, there are the slight remains of a dun measuring about 10m by 8m internally. No facing-stones are visible, but what survives of the core material suggests that the wall was not more than 3m thick. The gap on the SW probably marks the position of the entrance.

RCAHMS 1984, visited May 1976.

Measured Survey (1976)

RCAHMS surveyed the dun at Sanaigmore in 1976 at 1:400 using plane-table and self-reducing alidade. The plan was redrawn in ink and published at the reduced scale of 1:1000 (RCAHMS 1984, fig. 122B).
