Field Visit (September 1979)
NR26SE 16 253 615.
These remains are situated about 150m NW of Gartacharra farmhouse in a field known locally as the 'Big Day', apparently in memory of a local skirmish of unknown date. The remains comprise a roughly horseshoe-shaped enclosure surrounded on three sides by a turf-and-boulder bank and open-ended to the SE, where there are slight traces of a low broad mound. The enclosure measures 20m from NW to SE by 15m transversely over walls measuring from 2.5m to 3.0m in width at base and standing to a height of about 1m. The outer edge of the SE arm has a stone footing or kerb, now obscured by a recent deposit of field-clearance material. According to local information, a crude marker-stone situated immediately to the SW of this clearance heap indicates the position of a burial.
RCAHMS 1984, visited September 1979.
Measured Survey (25 September 1979)
RCAHMS surveyed the possible burial-ground at Gartacharra at 1:100. The plan was redrawn in ink and published at a reduced scale (RCAHMS 1984, fig.182A).
