Field Visit (9 August 2022)
This brick-built latrine, made with bricks from the Lochside Brick Works (NT18NW 65) and Whitehill Brick Works (NT26SE 71), is rectangular on plan, measuring 5.48m from NNW to SSE by 2.72m transversely over walls 0.24m thick and standing up to 1.1m high on the WSW. It sits on a platform that has been let into the slope on the NNW to a depth of 0.5m. There is a doorway (0.88m wide) in the NNW end leading into a small compartment within which (set against the foot of the NNW end-wall) is what appears to be a concrete trough with two subdivisions, possibly some form of urinal. The SSE half of the building contains the broken fragments of a concrete slab capping which has spanned the space at a height of 1.27m to its top. The purpose of this raised platform at the end of the latrine may have been to support a water tank.
