Activities

Excavation (21 April 2021 - 24 May 2021)

NM 28513 24072 A watching brief was undertaken on the removal of concrete shed floors and the stripping of topsoil and overburden on the site of a new artists residence, on the Isle of Iona. The watching brief was followed by the targeted excavation of the archaeological features as revealed. The work took place from 21 April to 24 May 2021.

The archaeological features comprised a midden dating to the Neolithic period; a series of buried soils; a possible ditch infilled with various midden-like deposits; a number of postholes; a clay and stone floor; and two sequential hearths. A considerable quantity of prehistoric pottery, worked stone and struck flint was recovered during the excavation, as well as a smaller quantity of animal bone, late medieval pottery, slag, and small iron objects.
