Archaeological Evaluation (4 May 2021 - 12 May 2021)
NJ 87386 10893 and NJ 87205 10661 An evaluation was carried out on Phase 3 and Phase 5 development sites at Craibstone South, from 4–12 May 2021.
The Phase 3 area saw trenches totalling 3311m2 opened with Phase 5 site trenches totalling 1365m2. In both cases, some of the evaluation area was lost to live service buffers, unmarked services, tree protection zones, hard standing, existing buildings and standing water. However, on both sites there was a comprehensive coverage and spread of trenching.
The trenching revealed a discrete area of archaeological survival beneath a deep B-Horizon topsoil protecting a 10m long spread of burnt material and in situ burning. A slot excavated through the deposit revealed two cut features, including a posthole with packing stones, which may be the remains of a possible prehistoric structure. Elsewhere, within Phase 3 there were a few remnant furrows and a large stone culvert.
The Phase 5 trenching revealed evidence for land improvement in the form of stone rubble drains and ceramic drains. Two pit features with charcoal flecking may suggest sporadic remains but these were set in isolation.
