Activities

Field Visit (29 March 2022)

This milestone stands on the N verge of the minor public road (C2w) that runs SW from New Luce towards Castle Kennedy, and is visible on Google Streetview imagery dated June 2021. It is a grey granite pillar that is roughly triangular in section with a roughly hewn rear and two dressed sides that face the road. The E face bears a large, incised letter ‘S’ above the number ‘8’, indicating the distance in miles WSW to Stranraer. The S face bears the letter ‘N’ and the number ‘1’, the distance in miles to New Luce. The stone, which has been painted white with the information on it highlighted in black, is first depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 25-inch map (Wigtownshire 1894, Sheet XII.11).

Visited by HES Archaeological Survey (J. Sherriff) 29 March 2022.
