Archaeology Notes

NO89NW 6 811 996 to 813 996.

A group of about ninety cairns extends over 5ha of rough pasture 100m NNE of Bogton farmhouse. The cairns vary between 2m and 6m in diameter and the largest are about 0.9m in height; amongst them there are several linear heaps of stones and stony banks, as well as a trackway flanked by shallow ditches and a number of other field-banks, which are of more recent date.

Name Book 1864; J Cruikshank 1941; W D Simpson 1943; RCAHMS 1984, February 1984

(Location cited as NO 8114 9961). Air photography (AAS/88/12/S17/14-16, flown 22 November 1988) has recorded hut-circles associated with cairns in grassland at an altitude of 50m OD. The small cairns probably represent stone clearance-heaps, and among them there are several linear heaps of stones, stony banks, a trackway flanked by shallow ditches, and other field banks of more recent date.
