Hill of Avochie 2
Date Fieldwork Started: 02/12/2020
Compiled by: NOSAS
Location Notes: The panel is located in rough grazing on the W facing sloping of Hill of Avochie, in a field which is used for cattle. The road to a quarry and Hillhead of Avochie farm lies approximately 100m to the W and a fence approximately 30m to the E. The panel is one of two situated 16m apart, with Hill of Avochie 3 to the SSE. Approximately 150m to the E is Hill of Avochie 1 (NJ 54173 46545, Canmore ID 294037). It was originally grouped with these panels under the same Canmore ID (294037)
Panel Notes: Before cleaning, the panel was partially covered with turf. On carefully turning back the turf 4 more cup marks were identified. The exposed rock surface measures 1.3 x 1.1m with the longer axis lying in a N-S direction. It lies close to the ground, rising 7cm at the N end: where it tapers to a point and gently slopes to the ground at the S end. There are two deep cracks at the N end of the rock. Ten cups were identified; 4 larger than 5cm in diameter and 6 smaller than 5cm. The largest was 7cm in diameter and 2cm deep. One has a possible radial. A further possible cupmark was noticed half way along the E side.

Date of fieldwork: 02/12/2020
This panel is located on the W facing slope of the Hill of Avochie. It is one of three panels sited around the Hill of Avochie and is 16m SSE of Hill of Avochie 2. It is situated within an area of rough pasture and approximately 90m from the minor road which leads to a quarry and Hillhead of Avochie Farm. A fence approximately 25m to the E encloses the area where Hill of Avochie 1 (Canmore 294037, ScRAP 110) is located. It was previously grouped with Hill of Avochie 1 and 2 in Canmore 294037.
This is a small, roughly rectangular, grey/brown rock measuring approximately 0.9m X 0.63m, partially covered with turf and the exposed surface with lichen. Its long axis is orientated WE. The rock is low-lying, rising to 15cm at the W side and gently sloping to the ground towards the E. Four cups were identified on the W side of the rock surface. The largest of these was 6cm in diameter and located at the NW corner, with the other 3, smaller cups, placed in a line running N/S from it.
