Activities

Field Visit (9 September 2014)

Nothing is visible in what is now an arable field of a Pit No. 9, which was opened in 1847 by its owner George W M Henderson. As depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Fife 1856, Sheet 36), the pit comprised little more than a small engine-house: a ‘Tram Road’ carried the coal 200m W to the ‘Fordell Railway’ (NT18SW 262) by which it was transported to St David’s Harbour (NT18SW 50). The pit was still in use at the end of the 19th century and the 2nd edition of the map (Fife and Kinross 1896, Sheet XXXIX.NW) shows an enlarged engine-house and three distinct spoil heaps close to it. The pit had evidently closed by 1913, the date of survey for the 1920 edition of the map.
