Activities

Field Visit (20 February 2020)

Four tapering concrete blocks, each measuring 0.7m by 0.7m by up to 0.75m deep and containing the stump of a metal fencepost, appear to have tumbled downslope to lie close to the N edge of the military road (NH86NW 11.33). They were likely part of the fence introduced by the Admiralty in the First World War and depicted on plans in the Fort Record Book held in the National Archives at Kew (WO78/5192 15/19 and 18/19). In this sector, the fence ran along the top of the scarp created in cutting the terrace for the road.
